Backgammon Tips for the Mid-Game

When you already are in the middle of the action in a backgammon game it is quite an easy thing to make mistakes along the way. The backgammon mid-game is just as important as the beginning of the game and the ending of the game. Here are a few things that you can do during the mid-game and help you finish off towards a great win.

First off is that if ever we see our opponent make an advanced anchor on the backgammon board it is a great idea to make one yourself. An advanced anchor puts the other backgammon player on the defensive, why let your opponent take offensive?

There'll always be times when you will be left substantially behind in the backgammon race, don't panic. When such times come one of the best things you can do to catch up on your game (not necessarily in the backgammon race) is to let some of your checkers get hit and set up a good backgame.

But when you have gained a substantial lead over your opponent in the mid-game, then keep racing. You already know your opponent will try to lure you into hitting a checker, don't fall for it. It is a better choice to make a point on your home board or to advance a checker toward the home board in the mid-game if you are really ahead.

When you have mini-prime in the making after the opening rolls the best way to continue building your backgammon prime is not to wait for the perfect roll and make a point in one turn. The best way to extend your small prime is to slot key points on the backgammon board. It may take at least two turns in backgammon to make that point, but it's better than waiting for that perfect roll. The only exception to slotting to extend a small prime is when your opponent has also built a prime.

When you are stuck in a prime versus prime situation in the backgammon mid-game, don't make moves that let you play high numbers on the next roll. The main idea in a prime versus prime variation is to maintain your prime longer than your opponent can. If you do that, you have a better chance of winning the backgammon game.

When lady luck smiles on you and you roll the numbers you really need keep your composure and don't get cocky. Always see each situation as unique and independent from your previous position.

These are a few tips to help you out in the backgammon mid-game. The mid-game is an important phase in backgammon. Knowing what to do in the mid-game spells the difference between a glorious victory and an agonizing defeat in a backgammon game.
